Josh Szatmari asked:

Before finding the answer to this dilemma, let’s take an overview of Hilton Head and its surrounding area.

Conveniently located along the south Atlantic coast, Hilton Head Island combines breathtaking natural beauty, world-class golf, award-winning dining, and quality shopping on a barrier island just 12 miles long and 5 miles wide.

With over 12 miles of sandy beaches overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, water lovers will find that Hilton Head Island is a coastal paradise.

The unique blend of unspoiled natural beauty and environmentally sensitive design is complemented by world-class resorts, amenities and activities.
Rob Springer asked:

Hilton Head beaches are right up there with golf and tennis as the crowning glory of our South Carolina vacation destination. The island’s beaches hug our island like a sandy white halo. Over 12 miles of fine white sand stretch out over several beaches.

Hilton Head Oceanfront Beach Picks? Here are the Top Spots

These public beaches have easy parking, plus facilities like restrooms, showers and more.

Coligny Beach:

Visit just one Hilton Head beach? This is the place. Coligny is the most popular. It’s an active family beach and it’s almost required for a Hilton Head Island beach vacation.

Coligny Beach is located off Coligny Circle at the end of Pope Ave on Hilton Head’s south-end. Coligny is a lively beach – but it’s not at all private. Here you’ll see a mix of locals and visitors take advantage of the wide open sand and amenities.

Folly Field Beach:

Folly Field Beach offers a bit quieter than you would get from our number one beach pick, Coligny Beach on Hilton Head.

One nice thing about Folly Field beach is that it is a very short walk from where you park, to where the beach is.

Folly Field Beach is located mid-island at a major mid-island intersection of Highway 278 & Folly Field Road.

Driessen Beach:

Our list of Hilton Head Island beaches ranks Driessen Beach as the third best, but put it on top of your list if your kids want a cool playground area.

This Hilton Head beach is located mid-island and has lots of parking – second only to Coligny – but the boardwalk goes on forever.

Driessen Beach is located mid-island off of Highway 278 at the end of Bradley Beach Road.

Alder Lane Beach:

Alder Lane Beach is a nice find for a Hilton Head Island Beach vacation. It manages to be close to the action without being in the middle of it.

Just south of Coligny Beach, Alder Lane Beach is a nice alternative to the sometimes hectic pace that you’ll find during the season at Coligny.

Alder Lane Beach is Coligny’s “little brother” with less of a crowd, a simple walkway, restrooms and vending machines.

To get to Alder Lane Beach head down Pope Ave. to Coligny Circle, go past Coligny Beach and exit onto South Forest Beach Road…

Limited Access Beach Spots for Vacationers:

Following are public beaches that allow only private access. Parking and easy entrance is “an issue” for visitors not staying on the property: Plantation Beaches and hotel beaches which offer only private and Islanders Beach Park which is one of Hilton Head’s newest and residents only beach location.

Hilton Head beaches offer a lot more than most people think. Your oceanside visit can be a simple family outing or a fun trip for a couple. Dive into more vacation tips and details at our Hilton Head vacations information website linked just below … We have unbiased info on hotels, villas, golf, restaurants, activities and more to make your trip better to Hilton Head better.

Caffeinated Content

Caitlin Moore asked:

South Carolina has several big-named vacation stars like Myrtle Beach, Kiawah Island and Hilton Head, but if you crave the same kinds of lulling beaches and charming historic atmosphere without the crowds, consider one of the lesser-known coastal hideaways. There are a few that would suit your need to escape the well-trodden roads and satisfy your thirst for individuality; in this case, Beaufort will do the trick. With a tranquil twist, this town will give you the gist of the southern shore experience, so prepare to refresh yourself by the sea.

Beaufort is the home of three major military institutions, so you’ll have the chance to see up close examples of a few good men and women who are here to protect the nation. After paying your regards, continue to explore the town’s rich history and distinguished appearance. It is actually the second oldest city in South Carolina, and its downtown has been designated a National Historic Landmark District.

Horse drawn carriages trot through the streets, helping to bring visitors back in time with the turn of a corner. Several forts and museums dot the way and are available to be toured, so after dropping by this area you’ll leave with a better understanding of America’s past. From pre-colonial to civil-war era, the buildings reflect Spanish influences, fire and warfare rebuilding, and the once-prosperous lifestyles of plantation owners.

After you’ve gotten a feel for the historical importance of this richly hued destination, you’ll be ready to have a little fun. After all, you did come here because you’ve been in need of some peace and quiet, and have so been looking forward to turning off the cell, the laptop and all other electronic devices that have shackled you to work and responsibility for far too long. Make the most of this escape by kicking off your shoes and selecting your swimsuit as the uniform of the week.

Beaufort, being on the beach, has plenty of activities that will keep you pleasantly occupied, and alternately warmed and cooled by the sun and the surf. Explore the low country via kayak, keeping your eyes peeled for indigenous wildlife, canoe and fish, take a sailing lesson, or rent a surfboard and catch a few waves. The Atlantic Ocean is brimming with appeal, and has quite a knack for soothing tired souls.

Golf is the thing around these parts, so if you’ve brought your clubs prepare to find yourself putting on some of the most picturesque greens you’ve yet had the privilege to play upon. There are several courses to choose from, meaning that you’ll surely be waking up early and heading to the one that strikes your fancy at least once. Several movies have been filmed in these parts, so don’t be surprised if you experience d?j? vu here or as you traverse other parts of this regal region.

The town will provide just enough to keep you feeling well-taken care of without overwhelming you. Dining options range from super casual to pretty casual, and you’ll surely find yourself whetting your appetite for all things shrimp and fish related. Hint: if you’ve never tried Frogmore Stew, be sure to check it out. Nestled among the historic buildings you’ll also find boutiques of all kinds. From modern wares to local art, your city wanderings will consistently reveal an assortment of intrigues.

Church ruins, historic homes, beach fun, and delicious culinary delights should be enough to fulfill your vacation expectations, but if you’re in the market to exceed them, be sure to check out a vacation rental. Beaufort boasts a few beauties that will keep your group housed in comfort and security while adding something new and different to the mix. Staying in a one-of-a-kind property with bonus amenities and lots of space will catapult your vacation to a higher level, so consider this option before you dutifully book a hotel room that may or may not pamper you the way you deserve to be.

Start planning now to make your Beaufort vacation a success. Go online to peruse the Beaufort SC Vacation Rentals [http://www.a1vacations.com/South-Carolina-Coastal-Rentals/Beaufort-vacation-rentals.htm], make your travel arrangements, and pack your sunglasses and your sandals for a trip that’ll restore and rejuvenate you.

Create a video blog

Jennifer Weiss asked:

Sitting majestically off the coast of South Carolina, Fripp Island is the ideal vacation destination for anyone who enjoys stunning scenic beauty and plenty of breathing room. As an alternative to the heavily-visited Hilton Head Island, Fripp Island has everything you could possibly desire for a relaxing vacation full of sightseeing, water activities, and land excursions. Whether you are looking for pristine beaches or a classic links course to work on your game, this resort getaway will meet all your expectations and throw in a few surprises as well.

While a vacation on Fripp Island can certainly include lounging on the beach, touring historic Beaufort, or heading out to sea on deep sea fishing expedition, perhaps the most important decision you will make will concern your accommodations. Fripp Island was meant to be enjoyed a certain way and to truly get the most out of your vacation, consider a vacation rental for your next trip.

One may wonder where the best place to stay is, and the answer is quite simple: in an oceanfront home. When you stay in a rental that is situated immediately on the sand, a day at the beach is easier than you ever expected. There is no need to lug your beach toys through a hotel and across numerous streets while trying to keep track of the kids. In a vacation rental, all you need to do is step out the back door for an afternoon of fun in the sun with the family. And if you happen to forget important extras such as sunscreen, everything you need is just a few steps away so you won’t have to worry about missing out on any of the family activities.

Another perk of staying in a waterfront home is the astonishing views that greet you in the morning and calm you to sleep in the evening. Make your way onto the deck with your freshly brewed coffee as the sun slowly creeps out of the water and the dolphins frolic in the waves below. Curl up on one of the lounge chairs and let the sound of the water rushing ashore nudge you out of your morning slumber so you can prepare for a full day of fun and excitement. And when your day is coming to a close and you are ready to cozy up for a restful evening, catch sight of the beautiful colors bouncing off the ocean from the private balcony off of your master suite.

Although you may have planned your activities well in advance and are ready to take advantage of all this gorgeous island has to offer, you simply cannot control the weather and how it will hinder your ability to do everything you want. While it is usually a drag to have to camp out in your lodging during a vacation, a rental home or condo can make an undesirable situation a little more bearable. Pop your children’s favorite movie into the DVD player to keep them entertained while you enjoy peace and quiet in another room with one of the books you pulled off the stocked shelves. This is also a great time to contact friends and family back home, so log on to the wireless internet to keep everyone up to date on your Fripp Island happenings.

While you usually need to give up other conveniences when you stay near the beach, Fripp Island makes it easy to enjoy everything spectacular about this island without missing out on anything that interests you. You can find vacation rentals that are located near the beach while also providing easy access to the amazing Ocean Creek Golf Course, sparkling swimming pools, and private tennis courts. With all these activities at your fingertips, you never need to worry about a dull moment during your vacation.

Begin your search for Fripp Island SC vacation rentals today to find the one that truly allows you to escape from it all. You are sure to locate the perfect rental with all the amenities you need for a memorable and magnificent trip.

Fripp Island

Herb Leibacher asked:

Are you thinking about a trip to South Carolina? You might be interested in learning about the Gullah People.

It is thought that the Gullah people of the Low Country of South Carolina originally came to the Sea Islands as slaves from Angola. The reach of these people once extended up as far as North Carolina and down as far as Georgia and the upper reaches of Florida. The Gullah people are also known as Geechee’s. The Gullah language is still spoken in the Low Country of South Carolina. It is a blend of the original language that came with the natives from Africa and a pidgin English that they learned during their days in America. Many professors from Cambridge, Yale and Harvard have tried to write this language down but this effort has not had great success.

The Gullah have tried to preserve their heritage and teach it to their children so that it would not disappear. They have special foods, crafts, stories music and traditions that they happily share with anyone who wants to learn about their history.

Most of the Gullah people in history originally came to America through Charleston on slave ships from the West Indies and Africa. They were from Angola, Sierra Leone and other gold coast areas. These people were rice farmers and some even came willingly to the new world.

The areas they came from were well known as rice growers and it was not long before rice became a major crop in North and South Carolina and the Georgia coast. Unfortunately, along with their knowledge of rice farming the slaves also brought the mosquito. Once in the Low Country, the mosquito bred and thrived. It was not long before yellow fever and malaria also became a part of the Low Country. Daufuskie Island is a famous Gullah area that was brought to the attention of the general public through a movie called Conrack. It was adapted from a book written by Fripp Island, S.C., resident Pat Conroy (The Water is Wide). It has long been a joke on Daufuskie that the mosquito is their island bird. According to natives on the island, the mosquitoes often discuss whether they will eat their victim there or take him with them.

There are a lot of Southern words that originated with the Gullah people. For instance, everyone has heard of Gubers(pronounced goobers); it is a name for peanuts. This word came directly from the Congo word N’Guba. Red rice and okra soup and Gumbo are all Gullah foods.

Gullah people are well known as superstitious. Although they mixed their native religions with Christianity and do not openly practice Voodoo, they still paint their front doors blue to keep away evil spirits and they put blue bottles in their trees so the wind will blow through them and keep the spirits at bay. One of the most famous Gullah practitioners of “root medicine” is Dr. Buzzard. Dr. Buzzard was real and his root medicine was legend. He was said to be able to make a criminal talk in court if he and his biggest nemesis, Sheriff MacTeer, could come to an agreement. He has recently been brought to attention in the movie and book “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil”. There are still root doctors in the Low Country today; although Dr. Buzzard has gone on to his rewards.

The book about Brier Rabbit is loosely based on a Gullah children’s story about Bruh Rabbit and his tricks and friends.

The Gullah are well known for their arts and crafts; most specially their sweet grass baskets which they still weave at the side of the road on U.S. 17 South between Georgetown and Charleston, S.C. Every year in Beaufort, S.C., there is a Gullah Festival where their arts and crafts are shown and enjoyed. Jonathan Green, from S.C., is a famous artist who paints beautiful pictures of the Gullah people in their every day lives. Many of the Gullah people who were slaves fought for the South in the Civil War. They were eager to defend their new country. Many had already been given their freedom and were working for wages for the plantation owners. After the Civil War they isolated themselves and their Gullah lifestyle flourished.

Caffeinated Content

Marianne Kelly asked:

Hurricanes and gale force winds frequently visit the coast of North Carolina, and its lighthouses have their share of ghostly comings and goings. Two lighthouses actually share their ghosts. One is the daughter of Aaron Burr, and the other the pirate who held her captive.

The Blue Lady of Hiton Head

Hilton Head Range Rear (Leamington) Light

Caroline Fripp braved a three-day hurricane climbing the lighthouse tower to bring her father, Keeper Adam Fripp his dinner. The hurricane blew out tower windows and the boards Keeper Fripp used to cover them, while the wind kept blowing out the lamp needed to steer sailors away from the rocks.

One evening, Caroline called to her father to re-light the lamp, and not hearing any response, found him on the tower floor clutching his chest. The next morning, during an uneasy calm, she went to assess the damage and found the tower floor submerged in nearly two feet of water, which meant the island, was under at least four feet. Caroline was frantic to learn the fate of Frisky, her dog, the islanders and the island cattle.

When the hurricane returned at full force, an exhausted Caroline unable to summon medical help for her stricken father, fell into a troubled sleep. The storm finally passed, and while the island remained under water, the lighthouse keeper’s cottage stood fast. Caroline replaced the wet wick, and urged her father to stay above water as she tried to take them home.

Fripp was so weak that when she finally reached the porch of the house, Caroline pushed him over the rail, placed a blanket over him and went for help. Island fisherman, Donald Stuart helped her get her father into bed, but when Caroline asked him to go for a doctor, he refused explaining that he needed to look for his family who were lost in the hurricane.

Caroline descended into another troubled sleep and had nightmares about the house being swept out to sea. The next morning while looking out toward the light, she saw the body of a dead child clutching her doll and floating in the water. When Caroline returned to the keeper’s house to check on her father, she found he had died from a heart attack. Stuart and two islanders placed Fripp’s body in a sea chest, weighted it down and left it at the low water mark saying, “Die by water, live by water.” Caroline never recovered from the shock and died a few weeks later.

People reported seeing a lady in a blue dress standing in the tower window or at its foot on stormy nights and during hurricane season. Some have reported hearing a woman sobbing near the keeper’s house.

Is the lady in blue Caroline searching for her father?

Ghost Share

Old Baldy & Cap Hatteras Lights – North Carolina

It is rare that two lighthouses share the same ghost, but apparently, Old Baldy and Cape Hatteras Light do exactly that.

The ghost in question is none other than the daughter if Aaron Burr. Theodesia Burr Alston, anxious to visit her father after his trial for treason, booked passage aboard the sloop Poet. The sloop was caught in a ferocious ocean storm, and, the crew and passengers reportedly were lost.

The sloop actually went aground at Shoals Head and immediately boarded by looting pirates. The pirate chief’s most valuable prize was the lovely Theodesia. She was taken to the pirate camp where three men were instructed to guard her with their lives. Unfortunately, for the men the angry pirate chief beheaded them when he learned that Theodesia managed to escape. The pirates eventually re-captured her and returned to camp. The confinement was too much for Theodesia to bear. She died, her body buried on Bald Island.

Shortly after her death, several witnesses reported seeing a woman roaming the shores of Bald Island and Cape Hatteras, seemingly looking to escape. Others reported seeing three headless pirates spotted roaming the same shores looking for their heads and their captive.

Some say they Theodesia and the headless pirates still roam these shores at night.

Website content

Jennifer Weiss asked:

Located in South Carolina’s Lowcountry, Fripp Island is a private island that is filled to the brim with resort amenities. As an alternative to the typically crowded, considerably more expensive Hilton Head Island, Fripp Island is perfect for any individual who wants a low-key vacation with plenty of sun, sand, and water activities. Whether you prefer passing your time on gorgeous beaches or participating in more active pursuits such as fishing, golfing, or hiking, Fripp Island is sure to have everything you need for a scenic and memorable trip.

As much as Hilton Head Island is considered a touristy destination, Fripp Island is the perfect place to escape from the masses and create your own vacation experience. The secluded beaches are the perfect place to kick back with your favorite book since you can usually find a quiet spot where you won’t have to worry about being run over by throngs of children. Your kids can live out there fantasies as they build sandcastles on the usually uncrowded beach and you can wade into the refreshing water at your own leisure. If you prefer to get out on the water, boat and jet ski rentals are waiting to take you over the water at high speeds and provide you with some breathtaking views of the island.

In the resort atmosphere of Fripp Island, one would expect at least a few golf courses and this island certainly does not disappoint. You can find a wide selection of courses on what is fast becoming one of the favorite destinations for golfers who prefer a classic layout surrounded by dramatic, oceanfront scenery. Ocean Creek Golf Course, designed by Davis Love III, is a challenging course that rewards golfers for solid, accurate shots. The fairways are open and the views of the marshland, ocean inlet, and lagoon surroundings make the course a must-play for every skill level. George Cobb’s Ocean Point Golf Links is another great option that uses the Atlantic Ocean and the shifting sea breezes to create a stiff test of nerves and ability.

When you want to spend a relaxing afternoon cruising around the island in search of noteworthy sights, there are a variety of options on Fripp Island. Children love to head out on dolphin-watching cruises while a romantic sunset cruise is the perfect way to cap off a relaxing day on the island. Scouring the rich marshlands of the Ace Basin is always an exciting proposition since it is home to a variety of wildlife and bird life, including alligators, otters, minks, dolphins, eagles, and ospreys.

One attraction that simply should not be missed on any vacation to Fripp Island is an adventure to historic Beaufort, South Carolina. This charming town has a noticeable Southern beauty that has survived throughout its 500 years. The best way to see everything this town has to offer is by following the walking map, which is available in the visitor’s center, that will take you past some of the notable mansions and churches in addition to graveyards that date back to the 1700s. Make your way down towards the bay for some amazing restaurants and to explore unique, quaint shops or head over to the Beaufort Museum to learn more about the rich history of the town.

With its moderate weather, challenging golf courses, sparkling beaches, and charming history, Fripp Island has everything you need for an exciting vacation away from the crowds that abound in coastal South Carolina. To get the most out of your stay, look into Fripp Island SC vacation rentals that are ideally situated on the ocean or near your favorite golf course so you can enjoy all the amenities of home in the surroundings that take your breath away. Begin your search for the perfect condo or home rental today, and learn what it truly means to experience a relaxing and enjoyable getaway vacation.

Kansieo.com

Caitlin Moore asked:

The coast of South Carolina has a certain unique allure; it’s a well-known vacation destination, yet has enough history, variety, and natural splendor to overcome the loathed label of “tourist trap.” Taking into account that there are miles of coastline and several towns to choose from, you’re quite likely to stumble on a getaway spot that will truly take you away from it all. For example Beaufort is place with much charisma, beach beauty, and several vacation rentals perfect for settling in for a few days or weeks. Escape the doldrums that you know are dragging you down and sign yourself up for some southern comfort as soon as possible.

South Carolina’s Sea Islands achieve a level of peace and quiet not easily replicated. Your goal this vacation will be to transfer that feeling from a large scale to a smaller one; meaning that the noise in your head must be exorcised and replaced with genuine tranquility and well-being. You’ve tried it before with yoga and meditation, but the best way to succeed is to invoke the powers of the ocean.

Get started by renting a vacation property whose silhouette strikes a chord within you at first glance. As you drive up the road and devour it with your eyes, you’ll begin to feel the bundles of stress in your back and shoulders immediately start to lessen, and a giddy, Christmas morning type anticipation will grab hold. Unlock the door and explore your new digs, being sure to savor every little detail.

Vacation rentals have found their way into many people’s hearts due to the ample and out of the ordinary amenities that they provide. Many hotel rooms get the job done, but every now and then you want your vacation to rise to the next level. Especially if you plan to stay in the Beaufort area for more than just a quick weekend, you’ll love having homey accommodations.

For example, cathedral ceilings, picture windows facing the sea, hardwood floors, and furniture that has been tastefully chosen and elegantly arranged will all bring a smile to your lips. Also raising the bar is your whirlpool tub and roomy closet, plus little details like a toaster, spice rack, microwave, gas grill, extra towels, and a DVD player will all aid in making you feel pampered. Travelers who go this route tend to end up “nesting” a bit, as having everything you need to cook intimate meals and socialize with your companions in an inviting setting will definitely keep you close to home.

There’s no shame in living a quiet life, isn’t that the whole point of this vacation? A walkway to the beach will give you plenty of ocean time; stroll or jog along the shore, rent a surfboard for a few thrills, or just lay back under your straw hat and take a breather. Whatever book you’re reading will take a backseat to just staring out over the open water, so bring plenty of sunscreen and become reacquainted with the outdoors. After the initial shock of seeing so much space, you’ll wonder at how you’ve managed to stay away this long.

Downtown Beaufort is a designated historic region and is brimming with restaurants, boutiques and museums. The surrounding areas offer golf courses, tennis courts, and nature tours via sailboat and kayak. From old Spanish forts to modern military facilities you’ll find plenty to see and do, should you find the strength to tear yourself away from your comfortable beach bungalow, that is. Your home away from home will become more pleasant each day, and you’ll understand why many properties end up being visited again and again by the same people. You’ll never have to worry about keeping it maintained or paying a mortgage, but having made memories here will make it feel as if it’s at least partially yours.

If this idea appeals to you and if the understated elegance of Beaufort sounds like it would fit your style, then start preparing to set yourself free from schedules, meetings and the like. A wooden cottage or oceanfront villa awaits you, so don’t delay any longer.

Caffeinated Content for WordPress

Caitlin Moore asked:

Whenever you set your sights on an island vacation, even if it’s a small island off the coast of South Carolina, you’re surely in for a relaxing time. Knowing that you’re surrounded by water, and being privy to a number of exotic sights and sound gives you the sense of true escape, especially if you’re in a comfortable lodging situation that will have you resting easy.

Put all this together and what do you get? A vacation that consists of a rental property on Hilton Head Island, a vacationer’s wonderland that exists to please travelers from near and far. Hundreds of unique condos and ocean side homes are available to truly tempt any timid travelers towards a new and exciting experience, so leave all that you know behind you and take this island adventure for all it’s worth.

Pick a vacation rental that will complement your style as a traveler. Most places have a kitchen that will allow you to save a few dollars by shopping for basics and preparing your favorites at “home” every so often. So, if you have an espresso habit look for a property with a modern coffee maker, and things will go that much more smoothly. Similarly, if you see yourself enjoying the chance to grill up your own delicious dinners, make sure that there’s a barbeque out back before you reserve your humble temporary abode.

You may be traveling with a large group, and Hilton Head is a good place for formal and informal reunions. Getting everyone together is really the best part of a vacation, as regular life tends to get in the way of relaxed interactions. Now is the time to catch up properly, so inspire everyone to get along by picking a vacation rental that will keep you close but not too close. Bunk beds, fold out couches, a spacious living room, and plenty of entertaining details (DVD player, internet, games, card table…) will create the environment you’ll need to have fun during your down time here on the island.

Not that the diversions of Hilton Head will leave much down time. From beachcombing to swimming in the waves, horseback riding to paragliding, the days will be brimming with bounties. Sign up for a kayak tour or head out on your own, wish the golfers good luck or the shoppers happy bargain hunting. Options will nearly overwhelm you here, so don’t fear to hear the evil tread of boredom or monotony for a few days. For the full effect of this realization, sit on your wrap around deck and appreciate this fact, cocktail in hand.

A good way to see Hilton Head is by bike, so rent one for everyone and make your way around the island. Watch for wildlife like birds, deer, and bobcats, and then stop at one of the many restaurants after you’ve worked up a healthy appetite. Return home for some time in the pool, or stroll down to the beach for a quick splash followed by a refreshing nap beneath your parasol. Scenarios like this are never ending, so rise each day with the singular thrill of not knowing what you’ll do in the ensuing hours, but knowing that they will be well spent.

Another positive feature of many vacation rentals is that they are pet friendly. That’s right, you won’t have to leave your puppy in a kennel and feel guilty the whole time you’re away from home. Check out the details beforehand to make sure, but many condos and homes gladly welcome all members of the family.

You’re probably making plans to go swimsuit shopping by now, and figuring out when everyone’s schedules will align so as to make a holiday to Hilton Head a reality and not just idle musing. Spend some time fleshing out the details now to ensure the best possible results, and keep your eyes open for special deals on spectacular Hilton Head Vacation Rentals. The island is waiting for you and your family, so don’t delay any longer.

Caffeinated Content for WordPress
