It takes days
to savor our local cuisine, from spicy barbecue and Frogmore
Stew—a flavorful concoction of shrimp, sausage, corn, potatoes
and onions—to smooth-as-silk She Crab soup and sweet potato
pie. One of the secrets to great Lowcountry dining is our
fresh-from-the-sea ingredients, although a wide range of choices
will please any palate.
The Lowcountry’s recipe for unforgettable dining includes
unique settings that treat all your senses. Choices range from
cafes with bayside patio tables to weathered dockside hideaways
to elegant chandeliered dining rooms.
Great Chefs of the South is celebrated the last weekend in
February with visiting chefs, wine and food seminars and a GALA
tasting event showcasing the best of the local cuisine and wines
from around the world.

Festivals are
among the things done best in the Lowcountry where a celebration
is almost always underway. Locals and visitors regularly take to
the streets, parks and waterways to enjoy life with the special
varieties of cuisine, entertainment, crafts and activities which
define the friendly communities and their customs.
Shrimp Festival in October includes a 5K Run/Walk, a Popcorn
Shrimp Run, golf tournament and a celebration of the shrimping
industry. Enjoy local recipes and tastings or buy it from the boat
to cook your own. Shop for arts and crafts and enjoy the blessing
of the fleet. Free evening entertainment, children's activities
and plenty of shrimp make this annual event unforgettable.
Fall Festival of Houses & History is an annual highlight of
the Historic Beaufort Foundation when tours of various historic
homes are offered along with accompanying entertainment.
Heritage Days in
November feature an annual observance of the African American
heritage so carefully preserved at Penn Center, a designated
national historic landmark on St. Helena Island. Craft
demonstrations, museum tours, gospel singing, storytelling, art
exhibits and much more are an exhilirating and educational mix.
Holiday events in December include tree lighting ceremonies in
Port Royal and Beaufort along with special activities at Penn
Center, downtown parades and A Night On The Town for shopping,
singing and seasonal comraderie.
Black History Month is observed each February with lectures, films
and special events arranged at Penn Center.
